remote ID

I’ve just received an Email from the CAA stating that I have to have a Flight ID by January 2026 and that by Jan 2028 my drone will have to transmit a remote ID so that it can be recognised by the authorities. It appears that the remote ID requirement was made law in the USA some time ago and that DJI drones with certain serial numbers were made compliant there. I’ve looked on the Web and cannot find any reference to this referring to the UK. I know it’s two years away before this becomes mandatory but is there any info on this for a mini 3 pro bought in 2023.

I fly Mini 3 Pro in the US. Here, FAA requires Remote ID for drones heavier than 249 grams. Mini 3 Pro doesn’t exceed 249 g when the standard battery is installed and RID is not activated. When the heavier Intelligent Flight Battery Plus is installed, the Mini 3 Pro automatically activates the RID. It’s a built-in automatic function. I’m unaware of any user setting for RID.

I believe the CAA law is structured (250 g threshold) similarly to FAA. If the Mini 3 Pro sold in UK are programmed the same as those in US, you should not need to take any action to comply. Drone Scanner app can be used to detect a drone when RID is activated.

In the US, we have two classes of drone pilots, Recreational TRUST (Certified) and Part 107 Citified. The Recreational pilots fly under a separate set of rules and they can only fly recreationally, for fun… besides having certain limits and the restriction that all flight must be for fun; they fly much the same as the Part 107 pilots, but the 107 certification allows the pilots to work commercially with the drones and have few restrictions…

With that being said, recreational pilots who fly a drone that weighs less than 250-grams are not required to have Remote Identification (RID) on their drones, but if the drone exceeds 250-grams, their drones must be both: transmitting RID and registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) (cost $5.00US).

A pilot flying under Part 107 must have RID and the drone registered with the FAA no matter the weight.

I am Part 107 Certified and for me to fly my DJI Mini 2 (sub 250-gram) I had to install a RID module on it.

As has been mentioned, the Mini 3 Pro with the large battery transmits RID in the US because the bigger battery causes the drone to exceed 250-grams… And this might already be true of your drone in the UK, otherwise, DJI might issue a firmware update that will enable your drone to meet the requirements…

Thankyou for your clarification of the US rules. The UK ones are similar except a drone weighing over 100 gms. must have remote ID from Jan 2028. I think DJI will already have this sorted as far as the UK is concerned but wonder why I can’t seem to get this confirmed. Thanks anyway.

the DJI Mini 3 Pro will transmit Remote ID (RID) in the UK when using the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus (the large battery), automatically activating it due to the increased weight above the 250g threshold, similar to US rules, but this shifts it out of C0 status, requiring specific operator ID and potentially different flight rules (A2/A3), with DJI likely adding a specific UK sticker/firmware for compliance as UK rules align but have nuances for legacy drones.
