For a while now I’ve been running into an issue where my M3E controller has been low on storage, frequently dipping below 6 GB and preventing me from installing new firmware updates. Over time I’ve managed to mitigate by deleting pretty much everything that isn’t nailed down, but I’m at the edge of my rope as my storage has almost entirely filled up with system data and firmware package. In the DJI Pilot 2 app, under “Data and Privacy” (the shield in the upper left corner by the profile icon), there’s a tab called DJI Pilot Cache Manager, and I’ve found some random caches there that it gives me the option to clear, but I’m not sure if I can/should.
With a background in web design, I’ve always known caches to be easily purge-able, as all they store is temporary data that’s rarely relevant. However, the caches here like “Photo/Video Cache” and “Flight Record Cache” have very real consequences if cleared (deleting all of the on-controller photos and videos in the camera roll and deleting all of the flight logs in file manager respectively). So if I attempt to wipe the Update Cache, is that just remnant data from previous update processes or does that actively delete installed updates on my device? And similarly for the “App Log,” is that like the flights I have set up in my DJI Pilot 2, or is that random trapped irrelevant data that can be deleted with no issue?
I know this is probably a stupid question but I don’t know where else to turn to, I cannot find any reference to these caches and their purposes anywhere online, and when I called DJI support, they did not bring up these caches as a way to help with my storage issue, they just suggested backing up everything and factory resetting, which to me, is a last resort option (just out of fear of messing something up and deleting existing sites, which would be a big issue for my job). Any guidance and experience is appreciated!
How much space are those cache folders using?
Have you considered deleting the TXT flight logs, or moving them elsewhere for storage? Those are likely consuming a lot of space, more so if you fly often.
Hey, thank you so much for the reply! The Update Cache is taking up almost half a gig, while the App Log is taking up 10 GB. I did actually move about half of the flight logs off the controller in the past, and I plan to backup and delete the current ones, however, even now with over a year’s worth they’re only taking up about 1 GB. I currently have a little over 3 GBs available but need a minimum of 6 to perform updates to my controller. If I could wipe that App Log Cache it’d be perfect but I just can’t tell what it it pertains to. At the very least with the logs gone I may have like 4 1/2 free. (Have also already deleted all photos and videos off the device.)
DJI doesn’t provide any documentation for these folders, as you’ve discovered. The AppLog files appear to be encrypted logs generated by the app, so I would assume they’re safe to delete. If you have any concerns, you could temporarily move them to another device so you can restore them if needed.
Okay, I’ll give that a try! Really surprised I haven’t found anyone else talking about this online given how I hear so many folks seem to struggle with controller storage on these things. Still annoyed they removed the ability to us a compatible SD to extend internal storage capacity. Anyway, once I get this figured out I’ll come back with the outcome, hoping for the best!
Hi,
Some time ago I had a problem with storage (albeit on my mini 4 pro controller) I had deleted photos and videos and yet it still showed not enough removed. However, I used a micro sd and managed to transfer the 10gb section over and it freed up a lot of storage for me.
Have you looked into doing this type of thing?
My solution was actually provided by my ChatGpt app.
Good luck either way.
